Saturn's Bright Moons Page Builder

 

This start page will allow you to choose a specific date in which to display the positions of the eight bright moons of Saturn as well as ephemeris and the current position of the rings as seen from Earth. When the page is loaded, it automatically enters the current date and time, and calculates the current julian date (JD). If you want to use this current JD value, simply click on the "Build Web Page" button. If you prefer to view the moons, rings for a different date, enter the appropriate values in the "UTC" date fields and select the "Calculate" button to calculate the JD based on the universal date entered. The server application requires a valid JD to build the web page; so, you can simply enter a JD if desired. Use the "Now" button to get the current universal and julian dates.

The JavaScript used to create the julian date from the entered date was created by Dan Bruton and modified by Don Carona. The Saturn Moons server application and web site created by Don Carona. More information is provided at the end of the web page created by using the form below. Under a normal load, the server takes about 5 seconds to render the planet, rings, moons and build the web page.

 

The Java viewer noted below is a simple applet built into the web page that let's you manipulate the image produced by the server. For instance, you can choose to show the moon labels; flip east/west; flip north/south; etc.
